The Sociology College
I．History and Development
Founded in 1986, the Sociology College(SC)was previously called the Department of Sociology, with a program of study in sociology. In 2007, the Sociology College established the Social Work program as an experiment, and in 2001, the College was authorized to confer master’s in the first-class discipline of Sociology. As of today, the Sociology College comprises two undergraduate programs: Sociology and Social Work, and four graduate programs, Sociology, Anthropology, Folk Study and Social Work. The Social Work program has been accredited as a National First-Class Undergraduate Speciality while the Sociology Speciality was accredited as a Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Speciality. At present, the College consists of two departments: the Department of Sociology and the Department of Social Work. There are several research or practice centres that are affiliated including among others:
· The “Shenyang Social Investigation and Research Base”
· The “North-east Social Transformation Research Centre”
· The “Liaoning Social Construction and Social Work Talent Training Base”
· The “Liaoning University Student Social Practice Base”

II．Faculty and Students
Currently, the SC has an enrolment of 288 undergraduates in Bachelor of Laws, and 98 graduate students (Sociology, Anthropology, Folk Study and Social Work) in Master of Laws. Students are from different parts of the country including 21 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government like Liaoning, Shandong, Sichuan, Henan, Jiangsu and Hubei among others.
There are 25 faculty members in the SS, 16 of whom are full-time teachers, 14 of whom have doctorates, and 5 are professors. The college has 12 graduate instructors at the university level and 6 part-time graduate instructors. The Sociology College has one teacher selected in the Liaoning Province “One Hundred-One Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project”, 1 teacher in the “Liaoning Provincial Innovative Talent Plan” and 1 teacher in “National Social Work Leading Talents Project”. Also, the College has 1 teacher serving as the chairman and another 1 as general secretary for the Liaoning Province Teaching Steering Committee of Sociology.
III. Degree Programs
The Sociology College offers 4-year undergraduate programs requiring 150 credit hours.
The main modules in the Sociology Program comprise Introduction to Sociology, Foreign Sociological Theories, Social Research Methods, Social Statistics, and History of Chinese Social Thought.
The main modules in the Social Work Program include Introduction to Social Work, Sociology, Social Psychology, and Social Policy.
The College offers 3-year graduate programs which require 37 credit hours.
The master’s program offers main modules like Foreign Sociological Theories, Sociological Research Methods, Special Topics of Development Sociology, and Development of Urban and Rural Sociology.
The master’s program of Anthropology offers main modules such as Anthropological Theories, Methods, and Anthropological Studies in China.
The master’s program in Folk Studies offers modules in Western Folklore, History, Folk Literature and Art, Sociological Research Methods, and Folklore Theory
The master’s program in Social Work is made up of main modules like Social Work Theory, Social Work Ethics and Values, Social Survey Research Methods, Advanced Social Work Practice, and Social Policy.
IV. Academic Research
As of now, the SC faculty members have successfully applied for more than 100 research projects respectively at national, provincial and municipal level. Over 30 research papers were published inChinese Social Science Citation Index(CSSCI), over 30 academic monographs were published. The research achievements have ever highly praised and awarded with different prizes which include “Outstanding Achievement Award of Scientific Research in Institutions of Higher Education”, Academic Works Award in Mountain Flower Award from Chinese Folk Literature and Art, Liaoning Province Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Award (Government Award) and other awards. More than 20 research reports were approved by national and provincial leaders, and were adopted by the National People’s Congress and Provincial People’s Congress.
V. International Exchange and Cooperation
Every year, the Sociology College organizes one to two academic conferences and ten to 20 online and off-line lectures. An average of 10 teachers participate in international and domestic academic conferences or seminars and deliver speeches.
International students are recruited in the following two programs, Sociology and Social Work.
VI. Distinguished Alumni
Wu Shuxiang, graduated in 2008, was awarded the honorary title in the 19th “May 4th Youth Medal in China” by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League in 2015. In 2017, she was elected as Deputy Secretary of Liaoning Provincial Party Committee of the Communist Youth League (part-time). In 2018 and 2022, she was successively elected as the representative of the 19th and 20th National Congress of Communist Party of China.
