School of Educational Science

Ⅰ.  History and Development

Founded in 1953, the School of Educational Science (SES) of Shenyang Normal University (SNU) was previously known as the Educational Teaching and Research Office. In 1982, the Institute of Educational Science was established and it was approved by the Degree Office of the State Council to confer master’s. It is the first master’s program of our university as well as the first master’s program of pedagogy in Liaoning Province. In 1985, the Department of Education was established to recruit undergraduates; in 1999, the Department of Education and the Institute of Educational Science were combined as the Department of Education; it was renamed as the School of Educational Science in 2003. In honour of the selfless donation of Mr. Tian Jiabing, a famous entrepreneur and philanthropist in Hong Kong, the SES was also named “Tian Jiabing College of Education”.

SES now has 2 two programs: pedagogy and applied psychology; two first-level disciplines for master’s: pedagogy and psychology; eight second-level disciplines for master’s and three master’s programs in pedagogy and applied psychology.

The SES has 10 research centres, including:2 departments of Pedagogy and Applied Psychology, Higher Education Research Institute, Discipline Development Centre for Curriculum and Teaching Theory, North-eastern Research Institute for Educational History, Research Institute for Mental Health Education, Social Education Research Institute, Vocational Education Research Institute, Research Institute for Human Resources and Management, Pedagogic Principle Research Institute, Educational Policy and Legal Consulting Centre, and Consulting Centre for School Performance Evaluation. The first-level discipline of pedagogy is a first-class discipline in Liaoning Province. The two undergraduate programs of pedagogy and applied psychology are national first-class undergraduate specialities.

II Faculty and Students

As of December 2022, the SES has had an enrolment of 411 undergraduates, including 64 second degree students. Undergraduates of the BA program of pedagogy will be conferred a bachelor’s in pedagogy, and undergraduates of applied psychology program will be conferred a bachelor’s in science. There are 344 postgraduates, who will be conferred a master’s in pedagogy or applied psychology. The students are from five provinces and cities including Liaoning, and there is one overseas student. There are 50 faculty members, including 15 professors and 23 associate professors. Teachers with doctorates and doctoral candidates; 10 teachers have overseas academic experience.15 teachers are respectively winners, receiving special government allowances from the State Council, Members of the Mental Health Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, winners of the May Day Labour Medal, distinguished professors of Liaoning, provincial prominent teachers, entrants of “One Hundred-One Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project” of Liaoning Province and Liaoning Province University Talent Support Program. Besides, there are 4 part-time doctoral supervisors.

 

III Degree Programs

The undergraduate program of pedagogy and applied psychology recruit 40 students each year offering a 4-year undergraduate program.

The core modules of pedagogy undergraduate speciality are: Education Principle, History of Chinese and Foreign Education, Curriculum Study, Theory of Instruction, Educational Research Methods, etc. Students need to complete 150 credits.

The core modules of undergraduate speciality applied psychology are: General Psychology, Physiology and Brain Science, Personality Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Psychological Statistics and Measurement, etc. Students need to complete 155 credits.

The SES is authorized to recruits about 110 postgraduate candidates each year, including 12 programs, such as: Pedagogy Principle, Curriculum and Teaching Theory, Education History, Higher Education, Vocational and Technical Education, Comparative Education, Education Law, Applied Psychology, Basic Psychology, Master of Education (Education Management), Master of Education (Vocational and Technical Education), Master of Education (Mental Health Education), and Master’s Professional Degree of Applied Psychology.

The main modules of postgraduates who majorin in pedagogy include Education Principle, Educational History, Educational Research Methods and compulsory modules. Students need to complete 53 credits at least.

The main modules for postgraduates in psychology are: Cognitive Psychology, Personality Psychology, Social Psychology, Theory and Practice of Counselling Psychology, Psychological Research Methods, etc. Students need to complete 51 credits at least.

 

IV. Academic Research

Up to now, the SES has undertaken more than 50 national, provincial and ministerial projects, published more than 150 papers in authoritative journals such as Science Citation Index (SCI), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI), and published more than 50 academic monographs. It has won 10 Humanity and Social Science Awards of Education Department and 10 National Education Science Outstanding Achievement Awards, 5 first prizes of LiaoningSocial Science Fund Project, and more than 30 second and third prizes of LiaoningSocial Science Fund Project. It has four provincial and ministerial research platforms.

 

V.   International Exchange and Cooperation

The SES has signed 10 cooperation agreements with well-known overseas higher educational institutions, holding international academic seminars, undertaking foreign aid training projects of the Ministry of Commerce, and training university presidents and core teachers in developing countries. Teachers and students have participated in international academic seminars many times. At present, an agreement has been reached with famous foreign universities to jointly cultivate doctoral candidates. Overseas students from six countries such as the United States, Russia and Japan have studied in our school.

 

VI.  Distinguished Alumni

l  Zhang Dexiang, served as the former director of the Department of Education of SNU and the academic leader of the discipline of higher education, president of Shenyang Teachers’ College, director of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education, secretary of the Party Committee of Dalian University of Technology, and a doctoral supervisor, receives special government allowances from the State Council, and is a representative of the Eighth National People’s Congress, a member of the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee, and the deputy director of the Academic Committee of the Chinese Association of Higher Education.

l  Zhou Haobo, served as the former director of the Department of Education of SNU and the academic leader in the discipline of curriculum teaching theory, executive deputy director of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education, secretary of the Party Committee of Liaoning University, and a doctoral supervisor.

l  Wu Daguang, graduated from the SES, is a professor and doctoral supervisor of Xiamen University, concurrently serving as the president, professor and doctoral supervisor of the Institute of Education of Lanzhou University. He once served as director of the Institute of Education of Shenyang Normal University and vice president of Xiamen University. He is now the executive director of the China Association of Higher Education and the vice president of its eighth council.

l  Shi Xiaoguang, graduated from our school with a master’s, served as the former director of the Department of Education and the director of the Institute of Education, and is now a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Education of Peking University.

l  Jiang Fengchun, graduated from our school with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and is currently president of Liaoning Normal University.

l  Zhao Xuejiang, graduated from our school, is now Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of Liaoning Shiyan High School and receives special government allowances from the State Council.
