School of Preschool and Primary Education
The history of Preschool Education Program of School of Preschool and Primary Education can be traced back to 1956 when Liaoning Art Early Childhood Normal School was founded. As of now, the School offers two undergraduate programs in Preschool Education and Primary Education, and three graduate programs in Preschool Education, Developmental and Educational Psychology, and Curriculum and Instruction (primary education).
Among which Preschool Education is honoured as “National Featured Speciality” and “National First-class Undergraduate Program”, and Primary Education is honoured as “Liaoning Provincial Featured Speciality” and “Liaoning Provincial First-class Undergraduate Program”. Both specialities are accredited as “The First Batch of Exemplary Speciality for First-class Undergraduate Education in Liaoning”, and they are among the first batch of Level-2 certification of normal education programs in Liaoning. They rank first among specialities of the same kind in the evaluation of undergraduate speciality construction in Liaoning in 2015.
The School has 10 speciality construction platforms, courses and talent titles at the National Level; two departments: Department of Preschool Education and Departments of Primary Education; five centres, including Preschool Education Supervision and Quality Evaluation, Teaching Quality Monitoring and Evaluation, Operation Young Pioneers Society, Practice Teaching and Children’s Education Experimental Training.
There are five teaching and research sections, including Preschool Theory Teaching and Research Section, Primary Education Teaching and Research Section, Vocal Music and Dance Teaching and Research Section, Fine Arts Teaching and Research Section, Music Theory and Instrumental Music Teaching and Research Section.

II. II. Faculty and Students
As of December 2022, there are 1,602 undergraduates who will receive Bachelor’s of Education upon graduation; and 323 graduate students who will receive Master’s of Pedagogy and Master’s of Education upon graduation. Students come from 21 provinces in China, and there are 2 international students from Thailand.
The School has 74 faculty members. Among them, there are 23 have doctorates, 29 teachers with senior titles, 6 with overseas academic experience. The School has one “Teacher of Distinction” at the national level, one member of the Teaching Steering Committee for Kindergarten Teacher Training in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, two vice chairmen of the National Secondary Society, one distinguished professor of Liaoning, one “Teacher of Distinction” of “Liaoning Revitalization Talent Program”, and one “Teacher of Distinction” at the provincial level. It also has one “Speciality Leader” in Liaoning, one chairman of the Teaching Steering Committee of Pedagogy in Liaoning and one president of the Provincial First-level Society. Two are selected into the “Innovative Talents Support Program for Colleges and Universities”, one talent among the hundred talents, five among the ten thousand talents of “One Hundred-One Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project”, and one “Leading Talent”, five “Top Talents” and seven “High-level Talents” in Shenyang.
III. Degree Programs
The School offers two undergraduate programs in Preschool Education (normal education) and Primary Education (normal education), and three postgraduate programs in Preschool Pedagogy, Developmental and Educational Psychology, and Curriculum and Instruction (primary education).
The School offers 4-year undergraduate program, with a total of 149 credits. The main modules of Preschool Education include Psychological Development of Preschool Children, Preschool Pedagogy, Philosophical Health and Health Care of Preschool Children, Kindergarten Game and Instruction, Kindergarten Class Management, etc.
The main modules of Primary Education include Moral Cultivation and Professional Development of Primary Teachers, Foundations of Pedagogy, Primary Psychology, Primary Class Management, and Primary Curriculum and Instruction, etc.
The School offers 3-year graduate program, with 46 credits for Preschool Pedagogy. The basic degree modules include Fundamental Educational Theory, History of Chinese and Foreign Education and Educational Research Methods.
The research field modules include Research of the Hot and Frontier Issues in Preschool Education, Research of Children’s Psychological Development, Learning and Education of Preschool Children, Progress in the Research of Preschool Children’s Psychology, Fundamental Theory of Preschool Education, Game-play Theory and Instruction for Preschool Children, Research on Teacher Education Theory and Practice, Reform and Practice of Preschool Curriculum.
There are 44 credits in Development and Educational Psychology program. The basic degree modules include Developmental Psychology, Scientific Research Methods of Psychology, and Progress in Psychological Research.
The research field modules include Educational Diagnosis and Instruction of Children’s Psychological Health, Psychological Statistics and Measurement, Research of Children’s Cognitive Development and Psychology and Education of Special Children. Curriculum and Instruction (primary education) program has 45 credits.
The basic degree modules are: Fundamental Educational Theory, History of Chinese and Foreign Education as well as Educational Research Methods. The research field modules include Curriculum and Instruction, Primary Class Management, Fundamental Theory of Children’s Organization and Ideological Education.

In the past five years, the faculty members have got 12 monographs and 36 papers published in authoritative academic journals such as Chinese Social Science Citation Index(CSSCI) and Science Citation Index(SCI), and won 2 Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Award in Liaoning. At present, there are 10 national speciality construction achievements and 6 national projects, of which the National Education Sciences Planning projects have been approved for 4 consecutive years. The School has achieved the Grand Slam in provincial speciality construction platforms with 2 provincial scientific research platforms: Liaoning Key Laboratory of Philosophy and Social Sciences and Liaoning Preschool Education Theory and Practice Research Base. In addition, the School shoulders the overall responsibility for school-enterprise cooperation for preschool education development. Relying on the cooperation, it is approved with Tin Ka Ping (Tian Jiabing) Fund Project. The School is in charge of Preschool Education Supervision and Quality Evaluation Centre of Shenyang Normal University. Entrusted by Liaoning Provincial Department of Education, it undertakes the supervision and evaluation of 10,000 kindergartens in Liaoning as a third-party evaluation agency (five years). As the training base of backbone directors (teachers) in Liaoning, it has trained in depth and systematically 3000 early childhood education workers in Liaoning in recent years.
V. International Exchange and Cooperation
The School has signed a joint training agreement with the College of Education of Northern Illinois University in the United States for academic exchanges and cooperation. It also undertakes the foreign assistance training program of the Ministry of Commerce“Workshop on Kindergarten and Preschool Education Environment in Developing Countries”. Some students go to Macao, Singapore and other places for high-quality employment after graduation. Preschool Education and Primary Education undergraduate programs, as well as 3 graduate programs, including Preschool Pedagogy, Development and Educational Psychology, and Curriculum and Instruction (primary education), are open to international students every year.
VI. Distinguished Alumni
l Liu Yue, graduated from the Preschool Education Speciality in 2002, is currently a member and vice chairman of Party Group of Liaoning Federation of Trade Unions, member of the Standing Committee of Dandong Municipal CPC Committee, and co-opted member of Liaoning CPPCC Committee.
l Song Yuhong, graduated from the Preschool Education Speciality in 1986, is the founder and president of Singapore YiQuan Education Group, an outstanding woman for the 40th Anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening Up. She was selected into CCTV “Chinese Pioneers” program in 2018, and one of the 100 outstanding Chinese in promoting the development of the times in 2020. She is also an honorary research fellow of China Academy of Management Science.
l Liu Yan, graduated from the Preschool Education Speciality in 2011, was directly selected as a grade leader in the kindergarten of Hou Kong Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School in Macau. Liu has won many awards in Macau Instructional Design Competition, and participated in the special program of CCTV celebrating the 20th anniversary of the return of Macau, and was reported by CCTV News Simulcast (Xinwen Lianbo).
l Zhang Xufang, graduated from the Primary Education Speciality in 2005, is a professor and doctoral supervisor in North-eastern University. Zhang has presided over 8 youth projects of the National Natural Science Found of China, published more than 50 academic papers and achieved 4 invention patents. Zhang has also won the first prize of the University Outstanding Achievement Award of Scientific Research (Scientific and Technological Progress) by Ministry of Education and the second prize of Technological Invention Award in Liaoning Province.
l Wang Jie graduated from the Primary Education Speciality in 2011. After graduation, he was directly selected to work in the primary section of Hou Kong Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School in Macau. Wang has won many awards in Macau Instructional Design Competition and was received by President Xi Jinping when celebrating the 20th anniversary of the return of Macau.
VII. School of Preschool and Primary Education at a Glance
l In 1956, Liaoyang Early Childhood Normal School was established, and the Preschool Education Speciality started to recruit students.
l In 1961, the school was renamed as Liaoning Art Early Childhood Normal School.
l In 1996, Liaoning Art Early Childhood Normal School was merged into Shenyang Teachers’ College.
l In 2000, the Department of Preschool and Primary Education was founded and it started to recruit students in Primary School Education Speciality.
l Since its establishment in 2012, the School has a total enrolment of 5422.
