I. History and Development
Founded in 1953, the history of School of Foreign Languages (SFL) began when the Russian program, one of the earliest undergraduate programs of Shenyang Normal University (SNU), was established and the Department of Russian was founded. In 1956, the English program was established. In 1996, the Japanese program was established and in 2020 approved as “Liaoning Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program”, “Liaoning Provincial Exemplary Speciality for First-Class Undergraduate Education”. In 2006, the French program was established and in 2008, the Translation and Interpretation program was founded. The Translation and Interpretation program has been developed to be “SNU Key Support Speciality” and “SNU Pillar Speciality”, and in 2022 was accredited as “Liaoning Provincial First-Class Speciality Construction Site”. In 2017, the German program was established.
Over the past the SFL has won various titles and honours at national and provincial levels, which include“National Featured Speciality”, “National First-Class Undergraduate Program”, “LiaoningProvincial Exemplary Speciality for First-Class Undergraduate Education”, “LiaoningProvincial Model Speciality”, “Speciality with Distinctive Features and Strengths inLiaoning Province” (top 100 speciality in Liaoning) , “The First Batch of Application-Oriented Exemplary Speciality in Liaoning”, “Liaoning Provincial Off-CampusPractice Base for College Students”, “SNU Key Construction Speciality” and “The Most Representative Speciality of Shenyang Normal University (SNU)”.
The SFL is authorized to confer master’s in the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature which encompasses three sub-disciplines: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature (American Literature, British Literature, Literary Criticism), and Translation Studies (English, Japanese, Russian).It is also authorized to offer master’s professional degree programs: Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) and Master of Education (English). SFL has a Research Centre for Translation and Cross-Cultural Studies, with 4 divisions: the Research Institute of Language Strategy Service, the Research Institute of Translation of Ancient Classics, the Research Institute of Translation of Literary Works, and the Institute of Sino-Japanese Traditional Culture Translation and Intercultural Studies.

II. Faculty and Students
Currently, the SFL has an enrolment of 1063 undergraduates in BA programs, and 134 graduate students in MA and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) programs. Students are from different parts across the country. There are 97 faculty members in SFL, 87 of whom are full-time teachers. Among them, 30 have a doctorate, 8 are professors, 47 have overseas academic experience. The school has 2 Teachers of Distinction at the provincial level and 3 at the university level, 6 academic leaders, and 36 graduate instructors at the university level.
II． Degree Programs
SFL offers 4-year undergraduate and 3-year graduate programs. The seven bachelor’s programs include English Education, English, Translation & Interpretation, Russian, Japanese, French and German. The SFL is authorized to confer master’s in the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, with three sub-disciplines—Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, and Translation Studies. It is also authorized to offer master’s professional degree programs: Master of Translation and Interpreting（MTI），and Master of Education ( M.Ed. / English). Core modules include: Introduction to Western Literature, American Ethnic Literature, History of Translation in China, Translation Theories, Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics Research, Chinese Language and Culture, Practical Translation, Simultaneous Interpretation, Computer-Assisted Translation, and Project Management and Localization.
IV. Academic Research
As of December2022, SFL faculty members have published dozens of research papers and translated articles in domestic core academic journals, over 40 academic monographs, textbooks and works of translation by national top publishing houses. The faculty members have also undertaken 1 research project sponsored by National Social Science Fund of China, 3 projects sponsored by the Humanity and Social Science Fund of Ministry of Education, and over 30 projects sponsored by Liaoning Social Science Planning Fund, the Humanity and Social Science Fund of the Educational Department of Liaoning Province, and Liaoning Association of Social Science.
V. International Exchange and Cooperation
In recent years, more than 50 undergraduates and graduate students have been sent to the UK, the United States, Australia, Japan, and Russia for overseas study and practice. 7 young teachers were sent abroad for a Ph.D. study or academic exchanges at international conferences. The school has 7 foreign teachers, engaged in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2021, the Russian program was approved by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation, Ministry of Education to run a Chinese International Education Innovation Project, jointly cultivating MTI students with Irkutsk Polytechnic University of Russia. The school is carrying out diversified international cooperation projects with universities all over the world, such as Western Sydney University, Hiroshima University of Japan, and St. Joseph’s University of Lebanon.
VI. Distinguished Alumni
l Wu Daguang, graduated in 1981, a notable scholar in the field of pedagogy studies, has made great contributions to the cause of education in China. He was appointed as vice president of Xiamen University, and deputy director of Higher Education Development Research Centre of the university. Currently, he serves as director, standing director of Chinese Association of Higher Education (CAHE), and the 8th vice president of CAHE.
l Shi Xiaoguang, graduated in 1985, is deputy director of Higher Education Research Institute at Peking University, and deputy director of International Higher Education Research Centre, Peking University. He also serves as deputy director of Zikao (self-taught higher education examinations) Professional Committee of National Examination Office, standing director of Chinese Association of Comparative Education and standing director of National Professional Committee of Higher Education.
