I. History and Development
Founded in 1956, the College of Music was formerly known as the Liaoning Province Normal School for Kindergarten Art Teachers, training 4-year normal students of music majors since 1961. In 1996, the school merged into Shenyang Normal University (SNU) as the Art Branch. In 2000, the branch was adjusted to include the Music Department and renamed as the College of Music in 1996. Now it has two graduate programs (Music and Dance) and two undergraduate programs (Musicology for Education Major and Music Performance). Among them, Musicology (Normal Major) is the national first-class construction speciality for undergraduate education; and Music Performance is the provincial first-class demonstration speciality for undergraduate education.
The college consists of 8 departments, including: Music Education, Piano, Vocal Music, National Vocal Music, Orchestra, Popular Music, Theory Teaching and Research, and Art Direction Teaching and Research.
It also manages a Music Research Institute, a Practical Education Office, and an Office of Art Projects for Public Benefits.

II. Faculty and Students
As of December 2022, there are 460 undergraduate students to be conferred Bachelor’s and 64 graduate students to be conferred master’s in arts and art studies. The students come from more than 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. There are also two overseas students from Korea and Russia.
The college now has 62 faculty members. Among them, 4 have doctorates, 24 are professors and associate professors, 8 have overseas academic experience, 17 graduate supervisors.

The undergraduate program is 4 years, with 150 credits required. The main modules of Musicology (normal major) include Chinese Music History, Western Music History, Vocal Music, Piano, Introduction to Musicology and Pedagogy, Psychology, etc.
The main modules of Music Performance major include Chinese Music History, Western Music History, Professional Courses, Harmony, Musical Form and Work Analysis.
The postgraduate program is 3 years. It requires 48 credits for Music and Dance major and 57 credits for Master of Arts (Music).
IV. Academic Research
As of now, the faculty members have published 53 monographs and 16 papers in Chinese Social Science Citation Index(CSSCI), Science Citation Index(SCI)CSSCI, SCI and other authoritative academic journals. They have undertaken 18 national and provincial scientific research projects and 2 “Provincial Graduate Students Joint Training Projects”. They have won 18 “Teaching Achievement Awards”. 7 “Provincial First-class Courses” and 1 “Provincial Off-campus Practice Teaching Base for College Students” were set up. They have won altogether 69 national and provincial awards, such as “Five Outstanding Projects Award”, “Wenhua Award”, “Cao Yu Drama Literature Award” and “Golden Award for the Creation of National Ethnic Minority Art Show”.
The oratorio Lei Feng, co-performed by the College of Music and the former Shenyang Military Region Advanced Art Troupe, won the “Best Award of Excellent Plays in the 4th China Campus Drama Festival”, the first prize of the “8th College Campus Culture Construction Outstanding Achievement of the Ministry of Education”, and the “Five Outstanding Projects Award” in the “14th Liaoning Province Spiritual Civilization Construction”. It is also designated as one of the classic plays of the “National Elegant Art into Campus Project”.
In 2021, it was approved as the “Special Fund Project of Liaoning Provincial Fine Art Creation and Production” and was listed in the “Action Plan of Promoting Original Cultural Fine Works of the Ministry of Education”. Another oratorio Pear Tree Blossoms was approved as the “2016 Special Fund Project of Liaoning Province Fine Art Creation and Production”, and won the Best Play of the “6th Liaoning Province College Student Drama Festival”. The symphonic suite “Spiritual Backbone of the New Era – Ode to Liaoning Models” was approved as the “2018 Special Fund Project of Liaoning Province Fine Art Creation and Production”.
V. International Exchange and Cooperation
The college has signed joint training programs with professional colleges from Italy, the United States, South Korea, Canada, Russia and other countries. It has selected outstanding students to participate in exchange performances and has invited many overseas experts and scholars to the college for academic exchanges and lectures. Teachers of the college have visited overseas universities such as Fort Hays State University in the United States, Avelino Conservatory of Music in Italy, and Pyeongtaek University in South Korea for exchange performances. All undergraduate programs and master’s programs are open to international students.
VI. Distinguished Alumni
Song Shihui, a 2016 graduate, is now an “Outstanding Young Pioneers Instructor of Liaoning Province”. He has won the “National Blood Donation Award”, “Liaoning Enthusiastic Good Youth Award”, “Most Beautiful Shenyang Citizen” and other titles. He is employed as “Shenyang Campus Anti-fraud Propaganda Ambassador”, “Shenyang Gas-using Safety Propagandist” and “Shenyang Anti-drug Publicity Ambassador”. He established the first “Song Shihui Off-campus Counselor Studio” under the Working Committee for the Care of the Next Generation, and made outstanding contributions to public welfare in Shenyang City and Liaoning Province.
Wang Tao, a 2016 graduate, is now a member of Liaoning Choral Association, tenor of Shenyang Jiuge Youth Choir, and music teacher of Chishan Campus of Liaoning Experimental School. He founded the first Boys’ Choir in Shenyang, which won the second place in “Shenyang Primary and Middle School Students’ Vocal Music Special Performance” in 2022, and he was awarded the title of “Excellent Instructor”.
Zhang Xiaoping, a 2012 graduate, chose to work as a primary school music teacher after graduation. She was awarded as the “Outstanding Representative of Shenyang Education System” to build a National Health City and a National Food Safety Demonstration City. She was also elected “Young Teaching Model of Shenbei New District, Shenyang”.
Wang Wenbin, a 2019 graduate, is now working in the People’s Government of Yongning Town, Yanqing District, Beijing. He was awarded “Liaoning Enthusiastic Good Youth”.
