I. History and Development
Founded in 2005, the College of Fine Arts and Design was originally the Department of Art of Shenyang Teachers’ College. In 1996, it merged with Liaoning Art Training College for Kindergarten Teachers to establish the College of Art of Shenyang Teachers’ College, and in 2003 also with the Department of Fashion, Liaoning Educational College.In August 2005, the College of Fine Arts and Design, Shenyang Normal University (SNU) was formally established, with some teachers of Shenyang Textile Industry College transferred to SNU.
The motto of the college is “Complete in Sincerity, Persistent in Beauty, Broad in Learning, Unremitting in Practice”.
II. Faculty and Students
The college is authorized to confer bachelor’s in Fine Arts, Visual Communication Design, Environment Design, Painting, Public Art and to confer master’s in Fine Arts, Art Design, and Master’s professional degree of Fine Arts and Art Design. The postgraduate program of Fine Arts is the provincial first-class undergraduate program, the provincial first-class exemplary speciality for undergraduate education, and the national undergraduate teaching pilot program of fine arts by Ministry of Education. The postgraduate program of Visual Communication Design is the provincial first-class exemplary speciality for undergraduate education.
The College of Fine Arts and Design has five departments: Department of Fine Arts Education, Department of Visual Communication Design, Department of Environment Design, Department of Public Art and Department of Painting. The college has centres for Visual Art Research, Large-scale Theme Creation, Students’ Patent Design and Intangible Cultural Heritage Research.
The college has 20 art studios and a large number of modern multimedia classrooms, such as a new art exhibition hall, comprehensive art teaching and demonstration laboratory, comprehensive design laboratory for visual communication, 3D digital printing laboratory, model and process design laboratory, patent innovation studio, ceramic art studio and multimedia image laboratory. The college also has 1 off-campus practical education base for college students in Liaoning province, over 30 college-enterprise cooperation practice bases under the industry-university cooperation scheme.
As of December 2022, the College of Fine Arts and Design has enrolled 1,639 undergraduates in BA programs, and 257 graduates in MA programs. The students come from Liaoning, Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Guizhou, Gansu, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Heilongjiang and other provinces. There are 110 faculty members in the college. Among them, 8 have doctorates, 36 are professors and associate professors and 17 have overseas academic experience.
Students are required to complete 175 credits for the 4year undergraduate program.
The main modules of the Fine Arts program include Chinese Art History, Foreign Art History, and Middle college Subject Teaching Design; the main modules of the Visual Communication Design program include Graphics Creativity and Performance, Illustration Design, Advertising Design.
The main modules of Environmental Design program include Engineering Drawing, Decorative Materials and Structure, Landscape Design Methodology.
The main modules of the Painting program include Introduction to Arts and Chinese Fine Arts Historiography.
The main modules of the Public Art program include Design of Public Facilities, Public Symbol and Visual Communication Design.
The college offers a 3-year postgraduate program for masters of art with a total of 55 credits.
The main modules of Fine Arts MA program include Principle of Arts and Chinese Art History.
The main modules of Art MA program include Principle of Arts, Chinese and Foreign Art History.
The main modules of the MA program Art (Fine Arts) include Professional Copy of Works, Oil Painting Colour Research.
The main modules for the MA program of Art (Design) include Visual Communication Design Research.
III. Academic Research
As of now, faculty members of our school have published 15 research papers in authoritative academic journals such as Chinese Social Science Citation Index(CSSCI)CSSCI and Science Citation Index(SCI)SCI, more than 50 textbooks, monographs and over 60 art books. They have undertaken National Arts Fund projects and more than 100 provincial and ministerial teaching and scientific research projects and horizontal scientific research projects. More than 1,200 excellent paintings and design works have won various awards in national and provincial professional art and design exhibitions. In the first national basic skills competition for teachers of art education in colleges and universities held by the Ministry of Education in 2019, 3 teachers from the college respectively won one first prize of individual all-round ability in the practice group, one second prize of individual all-round ability in the theoretical group, two single prizes of professional ability display in the practice group and one single prize of professional ability display in the theoretical group.
The college has successively signed international joint cultivation projects with well-known foreign universities such as Sheffield Hallam University (UK), Birmingham City University (UK), Josai University (Japan), Chiba University (Japan), Edith Cowan University (Australia), Krasnodar State Culture and Art University (Russia), and Kharkiv Academy of Design and Arts (Ukraine). In 2020, the college was approved as a member project of the Confucius Institute Cooperative University Alliance in Liaoning Province (“Russia-Ukraine-Belarus” Art Educational Cooperation project).
