School of Physics and Technology

I. History and Development

Founded in 1956, the history of the School of Physics and Technology (SPT) was formerly known as the Department of Physics with Physics as a speciality. Today, the SPT has two undergraduate programs in Physics and Electronic Information Engineering, a graduate program in the first-level discipline of Physics, and a graduate program in the second-level discipline of Material Physics and Chemistry. The Physics speciality is a National First-Class Undergraduate Program, and the Electronic Information Engineering speciality is Liaoning provincial first-class undergraduate program. At present, the SPT includes departments of Physics and Electronics. In addition, the SPT has three Student Innovation Practice Centres of:Teaching Aids Demonstration Design, Metalworking Practice Training and Electronic Technology. The SPT also shares a Teacher Skill Training Centre with other schools. TheSPT was authorized to establish Liaoning Provincial Physical Experiment Teaching Demonstration Centre, two provincial Key Laboratory, Liaoning Provincial Engineering Technology Centre, Shenyang Key Laboratory and Liaoning University Innovation Team.

II. Faculty and Students

Currently, SPT has an enrolled 796 students in undergraduate programs, and 62 postgraduates of Science. Students are from 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government.

There are 54 faculty members in the SPT, 48 of whom are full-time teachers. Among them, 14 are professors, 18 are associate professors and 16 are lecturers. 36members have obtained doctorates, and 5 have overseas academic experience. The school also has 6 part-time professors. The SPT has one expert receiving special government allowances from the State Council, and 5 professors have been awarded higher professional titles. The SPT also has the following distinguished staff: 1 teacher with the title of Teacher of Distinction at the provincial level and 4 at the university level, 6 academic leaders, and 27 graduate instructors at the university level, 1 teacher entering “One Hundred-One Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project” of Liaoning Province and 8 at national level, 1 “Leading Talent” at municipal level, 9 honoured “National Excellent Teachers”, “Provincial Excellent Teachers” and “Shenyang Top Ten Outstanding Young Intellectuals”.  


III. Degree Programs

  • The SPT offers a 4year undergraduate Physics program, which could be accomplished from 3 to 6 years with the minimum credits of 160, and students could be awarded Bachelors’ of Science. The main modules include Mechanics, Heat, Electromagnetism, Optics, General Physics Experiment etc.

  • The SPT also offers a 4year undergraduate program of Electronic Information Engineering, which could be accomplished from 3 to 6 years with the minimum credit of 160, and students could be awarded Bachelors’ of Engineering. The main modules include Circuit Analysis, Analogue Electronic Technology, Digital Electronic Technology, C Program Design, Single-chip Microcomputer Principleetc.

  • The SPT offers a 3year graduate program in Physics, which could be accomplished from 2 to 6 years full-time study with the minimum credit of 37. The main modules include Advanced Statistical Physics, Computational Physics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Advanced Optics, General Relativity etc.


IV.  Academic Research

In recent years, faculty members have undertaken 136 research projects including over 20 sponsored by National Natural Science Fund of China and over 30 sponsored by Educational Ministry, obtained 50 patents, published 478 core papers, 246 of which are Science Citation Index(SCI)SCI/The Engineering Index(EI)EI, published 31 professional monographs. The SPT has 1 “National Demonstration Course”, 1 First-class course of “Double Ten Thousand Plan” at provincial level, 1 “Provincial Demonstration Course”, 2 “Provincial Quality Resource-sharing Course”, 1 provincial First-class course. SPT staff also obtained 4 Achievements of Provincial Education and Teaching Reform with 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes.


V.  International Exchange and Cooperation

The SPT is undertaking diversified international cooperation projects with some American and Russian universities as well as research institutes. The SPT also cooperates with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing Observatory. The SPT has signed a “3+1” model school-running agreement with Bloomsburg University in the United States for a joint program, from which students could be awarded both Chinese and American degrees. SPT has also signed several cooperation agreements with Chelyabinsk State University of Russia to jointly build a condensed matter physics laboratory, carry out academic exchange and establish joint-graduate student education programs.

The SPT organizes 1 or 2 international academic conferences every year. 5-8 teachers participate international academic meetings or seminars every year, and 1-2 teachers make keynote speeches. The Physics speciality accept international students every year.


VI.  Distinguished Alumni  

  • Wang Shouyu (male, Doctor of Science), a notable scholar, professor and Ph.D. instructor, graduated in 2000. Currently, he is the Executive Vice President of the School of Space Science and Physics at Shandong University, mainly responsible for teaching and research related works in the school. Focusing on state-of-the-art research in the field, and his representative article has been nominated as the cover article by Phys.Rev.Lett, a top international journal. He has won the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, from the Shandong Provincial Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Hu Jimin Award for Education and Science, and the 2016 “China’s Top Ten Cutting-edge Scientific and Technological Figures”.

  • Zhang Shouyi graduated in 1994 and currently serves as the Headmaster of Fuxin Experimental High School.

  • Zhao Zihang graduated in 2006, and he has won the prestige of National Excellent Teacher.
