School of Grain Science and Technology
I. History and Development
Founded in 1954, the School of Grain Science and Technology of Shenyang Normal University (SNU) grew out of Liaoning Grain School. At present, the School offers three undergraduate programs in Food Engineering, Food Science and Engineering, and Food Quality and Safety; two authorized master’s programs: Food Science and Engineering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and one authorized Master of Education program in Vocational and Technical Education (Food). Among them, Food Engineering program has developed into a “Key Undergraduate Support Speciality in Liaoning”, “Application-Oriented Exemplary Speciality in Liaoning”, “First-class exemplary speciality for undergraduate education in Liaoning” and “Featured Speciality” in SNU.
II. Faculty and Students
As of December 2022, the School has an enrolment of 328 undergraduates who will obtain Bachelor’s of Engineering and 40 graduate students who will obtain Master’s of Engineering upon graduation. Students are from 11 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government.
There are 41 faculty members in the School. Among them, 19 teachers hold doctorates, 29 have senior titles, and 7 have overseas academic experience. In addition, 2 have won 2 National Prizes for Science and Technology Progress, 5 Provincial Prizes for Science and Technology Progress and 1 National Excellent Science and Technology Worker in Grain Industry. There is 1 doctoral supervisor and 21 graduate supervisors in the School.

The undergraduate program lasts for 4 years, with a total of 160 credits for Grain Engineering whose core modules include Wheat Technology and Equipment, Rice Processing Technology and Equipment, Grease Extraction and Processing Technology, Grain and Oil Storage, Ventilation and Dust Removal and Material Transportation etc. There are 170 credits in Food Science and Engineering program whose core modules include Food Microbiology, Biochemistry, Food Analysis, Food Machinery, Equipment and Food Nutrition etc.
The graduate program lasts for 3 years, with a total of 45 credits. The main modules of Food Science and Engineering program include Advanced Food Chemistry, Modern Food Microbiology, Grain Chemistry and Quality Science, etc.
IV. Academic Research
As of now, the faculty members have undertaken over 100 scientific research projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels, got 407 academic papers published in Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Engineering Index (EI), and have been granted 37 patents for invention. They have also won more than 30 awards such as the Second Prize of Liaoning Science and Technology Award, the Second Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, and the Science and Technology Award of Chinese Cereals and Oils Association. The School is selected as a pilot institution for serving county economy in Liaoning and a unit for selecting talents for the “Three Districts” project in Liaoning. It has established deep cooperative relationships with famous enterprises at home and abroad, such as COFCO, China Grain Reserves Group Ltd. Company and Orient Group and have solved more than 30 technical problems for related food enterprises.
There are 24 specialized laboratories in the School, including five scientific research platforms: Liaoning Key Laboratory of Featured Grain and Oil Processing and Quality Control,
Liaoning Professional Technology Innovation Centre for Grain Loss-reduction after Production, and Shenyang Key Laboratory of Grain and Oil Further Processing, etc. In recent years, the School has been committed to serving the national grain industry and social and economic development, and has set up the following four research fields, namely, Grain Collection, Storage and Transportation Engineering and Technology; Further Processing and Quality Control of Grain and Oil; Grain, Oil and Food Testing Technology and Big Data; Grain, Oil, Food Safety and Nutrition and Health.
V. International Exchange and Cooperation
The School has been continuously expanding international cooperation and has established academic cooperation with overseas scientific research institutions and universities, such as Vigo University in Spain, Istanbul University of Technology and Kansas State University in the United States. It actively promotes the “Young Foreign Talent Program” of Foreign Experts Project conducted by Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology. Seven young scientists from Myanmar, Iran, Egypt, Pakistan and other countries have come to the School for study and academic exchange. In 2022, the project of “Young Foreign Talent Program” was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. One young Egyptian scholar will conduct an academic exchange with the School.

l Ning Xingshi, graduated in 1985, is now chairman of Liaoyang Hongwei Grain Depot Co.,

l He Yong, graduated in 1985, is currently Chairman of the Board of Shenyang Boeing
l Feed Co., Ltd., vice president of Liaoning Feed Association and vice chairman of Liaoning Association of Animal & Veterinary Sciences;
l Sun Xiugang, graduated in 1986, is now northeast regional general manager of Grain, Flour/Noodle Management Department of COFCO
l Wang Chaoshan, graduated in 2012, is currently general manager of the northern region of agricultural products of Xiamen International Trade Group Corp., Ltd.
VII. School of Grain Science and Technology at a Glance
l In 1954, Liaoning Grain School established (predecessor);
l In 1960,Liaoning Grain School (the first Secondary Technical School in Liaoning food system);
l In 2000, Liaoning Grain School was merged with Shenyang Normal University, and Vocational and Technical School of Shenyang Normal University was established.
l In 2012, theSchool of Grain Science and Technology was established.
l Up to now, the School has nurtured more than 10,000 students, including 104 graduates, 1,104 undergraduates, 7,000 technical secondary school graduates and 2,000 junior college graduates.
