College of International Education

Founded in 1985, the College of International Education (CIE) is partnered with the International Exchange and Cooperation Office, the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office, and the International Chinese Language Education Office. It has been designated to enrol international students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship and the Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, and is dedicated to cultivating international students awarded with scholarships. Our college is a sub-unit of the China Association for International Education, and the Liaoning Provincial Demonstration University for International Students’ Education. It is the principle unit of the Liaoning Association for International Exchange in Education and the organizing unit of China’s foreign aid project under the Ministry of Commerce, and the Chinese Liaoning Province Language Education Base. Our college is also an HSK Test Centre approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, and the only officially authorized Italian language proficiency test centre in North-east China and Inner Mongolia.

The college offers two undergraduate programs, Chinese Language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL). The College of International Education has 3 departments: the Chinese Language Teaching and Research Department (undergraduate), the TCSOL Department (undergraduate) and the Foreign Students’ Language Training Department.

Since 1985, our college has enrolled over 10,000 international students at different levels from more than 100 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, Africa, America and Oceania, with an annual enrolment of over 1000 long-term and short-term international students. There are 42 faculty members in our college, 20 of whom are full-time teachers. Among them, 8 hold a doctorate, 3 are full professors and 10 are associate professors. 4 among them have overseas study experience, 16 have overseas work experience. 1 is a member of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching and 1 is a standing director of the Language Informatization and Intellectualization Research Association under the Chinese Language Modernization Society. 1 professor has been chosen for the provincial “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project”.There are 9 graduate instructors.

The College of International Education has two undergraduate programs, the Chinese Language Program and the Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Program. It has established a complete system of undergraduate and graduate education along with short and medium-term Chinese language training. Language competence and culture are intertwined and applied in program instruction.

The duration of study for undergraduate programs is 4 years with a total of 160 credits. The core modules in the Chinese Language program include basic Chinese courses, Modern Chinese (theory), Chinese Literature, and Chinese Culture etc. The core modules in the Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Program include basic Chinese language courses, Modern Chinese (theory), Methods and Practice of TCSOL, and General Introduction to China.

 

Up to now, the faculty members have presided over more than 10 research projects sponsored by the China National Social Science Fund or other national level funds. They have carried out over 50 research projects at the provincial or municipal levels. Faculty members have also published over 20 research papers in renowned academic journals such as Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI) and other core journals in China. Our faculty has produced 30 academic monographs, and over ten consulting proposals and reports. The college organizes international academic conferences or seminars annually.

 

Some of our most distinguished alumni include the following:

·     He Junliang (Zdeněk Chmelka), Czech, graduated with a bachelor’s in 2012, currently working at the Confucius Institute of Olomouc Palatsky University. He loves Chinese traditional culture, especially Chinese Kungfu, Qigong, Chinese philosophy, and Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Since 2019, he has studied traditional Chinese medicine (massage, acupuncture) at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Prague, Czech Republic, and engaged in Chinese-Czech translation in TCM.

·     Xie Zongxu (Agostino Sepe), Italian, graduated with a master’s in 2013, is currently teaching courses such as Chinese History and Culture and Ancient Chinese Language at the University for Foreigners in Siena, Italy. During his study at our college, he was awarded the Bronze Medal in the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Language Competition for International Students in China.

·     Huang Xiaomao (Katherine Ackerman), American, graduated with a master’s in 2016, won the third prize in the 2014 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Language Conference for Global Foreigners sponsored by CCTV and the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Special reports about her were broadcast by CCTV programs like Topics in Focus, Face to Face and Foreigners in China. In the 2021 Lunar New Year film “Hi, Mom!”, she portrayed the role of a volleyball player named Mao Qin.

 

CIE at a Glance
